“Santa’s Bringin’ Bubbles Back” (2018)

I carried the Christmas theme over into January with this painting, my first of 2018, which is based on a puppet built and animated by my partner, Michael Granberry (you can follow him here).

Originally built several years back, Santa makes an appearance in two of Michael’s animated shorts: “Some Assembly Required” and “Penguins Don’t Fly,” both of which you can laugh along with below.

Since then, he’s become a yearly Christmas decoration.  And this year he happened to find himself holding up one of a string of bubble lights on the window ledge.  I noticed how he’d been positioned out of the corner of my eye while I was reading on the sofa.  I love bubble lights, and I love Santa, so the writing was on the wall.

The houses are cardboard candy boxes that have also lived on to become part of our regular Christmas display.  The tiny little details of their facades were tricky, but this is why God invented small size liners and rounds.  The houses added some unexpected obstacles and that’s why Santa didn’t arrive to my blog until February.  But for those of us who wish Christmas was year round, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect.
